November 30th, 2011 Mark your calendars for the LHMS PTA Flippin’ Pizza Night! From 3-10pm on Thursday, December 15th, Flippin’ Pizza will donate 50% of purchase from Hughes families. Whether you are a student stopping in for a slice after school, or an adult taking a night off from cooking, all you need to do is let them know you are there to support Hughes, and they will make the donation. Contact Sumi Vintimilla (sumivan@verizon.net) with any questions.
November 14th, 2011 On Thursday, November 17, from 9 – 10:30 am, the Hughes Parent Center (located in Trailer #6) will be hosting a meeting to further our understanding of Teen Technology Use and Misuse. A representative from the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board will talk about current trends in teen technology use and social networking. The discussion will include the benefits and risks of social networking, cyberbullying, and solutions for parents as we educate and protect our teens. Contact Melinda Rivas at Hughes (703) 715-3643 for more information.
October 26th, 2011 The 2011-2012 Hughes Directory is now available on Blackboard. Sign in under your parent view account, and look for the Library Learning Center link in your child’s course list. Then click on the Student Directory tab. If you have further questions, contact directory@lhmspta.com
October 26th, 2011 We are approaching 250 PTA members for this year! Not too bad, but I know we can do better. Please help to make this the year where we have at least 50% of our school community join. If you haven’t joined please take a few minutes to do so. Membership is only $10.00 and the forms can be found on the PTA website http://www.lhmspta.com/BTS_2011/Membership%20Flyer%202011.pdf. Your $10.00 (and extra tax deductible donation) helps support our school and provide for extras that wouldn’t be available to our children and teachers otherwise. Questions? Contact Lilian at ptamembership@lhmspta.com
October 26th, 2011 As an IB MYP school, service learning is a vital component to creating awareness and a globally minded student body. Each student must complete 3 corresponding reflections totaling at least 25 hours of service learning (25 hrs for 7th grade and 25 hrs for 8th grade). For each activity completed, student must reflect on the significance of the activity. This reflection should be at least a paragraph in length. While students are required to do 25 hours, choice and quality are essential to a meaningful experience. Each student is a member of the Hughes Service Learning blackboard community. This website will have updates of service learning opportunities, as well as extra service learning service log sheets. In order for credit to be given, students must turn their hours and reflections into their History or Civics teacher once they are completed. Quarterly announcements, KITs and memos will continue to support and encourage the charge in creating a better community all students and families.
