Please join us for the next PTA meeting on Thursday, Oct 13 at 6:30 PM. We will meet in the Library/Media Center. The meeting will also include pizza donated by Flippin Pizza.
Box Tops for Education
You've probably been clipping Box Tops for your children's elementary school for years, but did you know that the LHMS PTA is also collecting them? The school receives .10 for each box top collected and that money goes to programs for our children. So send those box tops in and have your child put them in the box located in the school office.
We are fortunate to partner with several stores that sponsor programs supporting our schools through donations of money or supplies. These programs simply require that you designate with the store which school (or schools) should receive credit for your purchases each year. You can find a complete list of participating businesses on our PTA website athttp://www.lhmspta.com/grocery-signup.html But please note, even if you have registered with these stores before, many require you to re-register every new school year.
Join the PTA for a night of golf on Thursday, October 6 from 4p-8p. We need 75 families to come out for our PTA to receive $1000! Top Golf is fun! Think bowling except with a golf ball and club. You can have up to 6 members on a team. They serve food and have other games. Come out and help your school while having fun at Top Golf Ashburn--there's no school on Friday!
Join the us at Flippin Pizza on Wednesday, Sept 28 and raise money for LHMS PTA. Present the enclosed coupon and up to 50% of proceeds will be donated back to the PTA.
Join Flynn Realty Associates in partnership with Langston Hughes MS for our Generosity Feeds event on October 23rd at 9am at LHMS.
All the food is being given to Langston Hughes MS to distribute to children who are going hungry outside of school hours. For more information and to register, go to www.GenerosityFeedsReston.org. Thank you for supporting Langston Hughes MS and your community!
The third annual FCPS Mental Health and Wellness Conference will be held on Saturday, October 29, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Fairfax High School. Dr. Dena Simmons, director of implementation at the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence, will be the keynote speaker, and Dr. Gloria Addo-Ayensu, Fairfax County director of health, is a featured speaker. Participants will be able to choose from more than 50 breakout sessions, and an exhibit hall will have a variety of resource tables with information about mental health and other services available in the area. More information will be posted on the FCPS website soon.
The FCPS Parent Resource Center offers a wide variety of free classes and workshops for parents throughout the school year. And their very popular Mind in the Making series is returning again this year. Check out their website for a list of the upcoming programs https://www.fcps.edu/node/28279 The workshops fill up fast, so register quickly.
Parents who speak Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, or Vietnamese can call the telephone information line for general information about FCPS and to receive support if they are having difficulty communicating with their children's schools due to a language barrier.

PTA Help Wanted
Please take a look at the job openings for this school year and see if there’s one that appeals to you. PTA involvement in middle school is a nice way to stay in touch with other parents, and most jobs take place outside of school hours. http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040d4dac0-ptaboard
Join the PTA (Why? Because we need you)
In 2015, LHMS eliminated traditional fundraisers. We rely solely on direct donations from Hughes families and our community.
We ask each LHMS family, to join the PTA, and to please consider donating $50 to be a Panther Pride member. In appreciation of your PTA Panther Pride donation, we will give you a LHMS PTA Water Bottle. Pick up yours at Back to School Night, or email Membership@LHMSpta.com to have it sent home with your student.
PTA Panther Pride supports our mission to ensure that all of our students and teachers/staff have access to everything they need for success in the classroom, additional/new technology, school events, mini-grants and student recognition activities. The PTA activities for students (and families) include Skate Night, Homecoming Parade, Panther 5K, Student Basketball Game, Restaurant Spirit Nights, and a new fun event to be announced soon. We coordinate staff appreciation events throughout the year, support Spirit weeks for the whole school and recognize student accomplishments through Honor Roll and Bringing Up Grades celebrations.
To join the PTA, online at http://www.lhmspta.com/join-the-pta.html or send in the paper form from your student’s paperwork.
